AU Payment Times Register
The Payment Time Register (PTR) is a semi-annual register of data as to how large businesses (over $100M) pay their small business suppliers. This mandated requirement on large businesses is a treasure trove of valuable information as to the payment terms and practices of the customers which every small business in Australia would love to have. This section of the ActiveClearing site allows you to drill down into the data specifically based on your individual needs and interest and, as far as we know, is the only technical solution which allows for such extensive functionality.
ActiveClearing

A NEW AND DIFFERENT WAY OF DEALING WITH CASH FLOW AND PAYMENTS.

WE CALL IT CONNECTED PAYMENTS. YOU'LL CALL IT NECESSARY.

Currently available in Australia and the UK.

You will never go back to the old way of paying 'gross' payments.

Use your existing financial connections to reduce your required cash-flow. We'll help you.

It's the right thing to do.

Step #1: Here's how it works...
Our Philosophy
ActiveClearing is an old idea. 250 years old to be accurate. In 1770, banks in London decided to get together in a pub and would deposit the cheques in each bank's box, tally them all up, and pay one another only the 'net' amount. They realised that paying out (say) $1,000 and getting back $800 was inefficient, instead of just paying the $200 'net' amount. And they did this because they understood the financial connection that they all had within the same System. It was a connected group and they could change the way they did business because of that connection. They created clearing. And today banks still use clearing, and could not possibly operate without it considering the $billions transferred every day.
Well, Australian businesses have a supplier/customer connection with each other, and they are all connected to each other at some level, so the same rules can apply. ActiveClearing is a clearinghouse, exactly the same as the pub in London. We identify the connections you have with other businesses, and optimise the payment transfers between them all based on those connections. This is why our vision statement is: Connected Payments.
However, Connected Payments is a slight misnomer. Because ActiveClearing uses connections to eliminate payments. It frees up cash-flow. The bank paying out $1,000 and getting back $800, doesn't need to use $1,000 of its valuable cash to pay it's accounts. No, under clearing, it uses only $200 of its cash. The other $800? Well, it can use this money to lend-out to actual customers and make profit. This is why ActiveClearing is so powerful. It uses your own business connections to reduce the cash-flow required to run your business so you can use that cash to: hire that 2nd programmer, buy that 3rd delivery van you've always wanted, buy that additional piece of machinery, advertise more, etc etc. It allows you to use your cash on-hand to grow your business, rather than paying bills. The banks could not operate without clearing, and ActiveClearing brings this to ordinary businesses.
The beauty of ActiveClearing is that everyone gets paid exactly the same as they always did, except that it just takes a lot less cash-flow to do it all. Magic? The banks don't think so. For them it's business as usual.
So ActiveClearing is about connections. And we need to understand your connections. If Comp A has a supplier Comp B who has a supplier Comp C who has the original Comp A as a supplier (A -> B -> C -> A) then we have found a relationship chain. Then ActiveClearing can work-out the 'net' amount of this loop. Then we can save cash-flow. Everyone in the chain can benefit. And there will be millions of these types of connections to utilise. But this is only the start. Because the more businesses connect, the more connection chains we can find, the more cash-flow savings and less payment hassles for you. So Comp A will want D,E,F to come on, Comp B will want D,G,H to come on, Comp C will want D,I,J, etc (Wow. Comp D is going to get a lot of cash-flow savings!). So please join. One more business joining ActiveClearing is one more potential connection.
And ActiveClearing doesn't create the connections. No, the connections are existing. The network is already in-place. You have those connections now. ActiveClearing just identifies them. Much like at the pub in London in 1770.
Our Mission
We are single-minded. We understand that ActiveClearing brings immense public good. We think bringing this to market is a duty. And it must be done.
How we envision our Path
  • Take-up is slow at first, as businesses may allow their connection information to be seen, but the network will be too small to identify connection loops.
  • ActiveClearing will use your connection contacts (if you choose to allow us) to notify your connected businesses to come onto the ActiveClearing network thus greatly expanding the possibility of connection loops to benefit everyone. Just join, agree, and we can check.
  • Bingo. Some day soon, we find it! The first connection loop that can be cleared. This is Day #1. Ground zero. The day the benefits start.
  • The businesses benefitting from ActiveClearing all want more connected businesses on the ActiveClearing network. A,B,C will want D,E,F. These people, in concert with the automated virality of ActiveClearing, want to expand their network thus increasing their cash-flow savings, and lessening payment hassles. They all begin to see what clearing can offer.
  • Now ActiveClearing has enough business connections on the network that, when someone joins, they have a good chance to start benefiting from clearing immediately.
  • ActiveClearing forms a business directory where other businesses can search/choose a particular supplier based on whether they are on the ActiveClearing network. If your business needs a nuts/bolts supplier, why would you want a supplier where you could not clear this expense and minimise your cash-flow? A business not on the ActiveClearing network operates at a disadvantage.
  • The viral nature and increasing cash-flow benefits of the ActiveClearing network means that there isn't a finance manager in the country that cannot see the benefits and would not want to participate.
  • The gross benefit of ActiveClearing is emerging. Businesses have considerably more cash for growth, less requirements for expensive short-term financing, less payment hassles, less businesses in trouble and/or bankruptcies, business optimism increases, GDP rises. Clearing is the standard practice. As it should.
Step #3: Test Your Clearing Knowledge!
Test #1
The green $amounts are the Gross payments between the companies.
What Net payment does each company pay under ActiveClearing?
Nope! Try again.
Correct!
Each company receives $10 and also pays-out $10, so the Net payments are $0.
No one pays anything to anyone!
How good is this? Without ActiveClearing the gross payments are $30, but ActiveClearing works it's magic and no money is exchanged.
Test #2
Now the green payment $amounts are not equal.
What Net payment does each company pay under ActiveClearing?
Nope! Try again.
Correct!
Company A is the only one with a negative Net amount:
($6 in, $10 out = -$4). The other companies are a positive Net amount:
(B - $10 in, $7 out =+$3; C - $7 in, $6 out = +$1), so A must pay B $3, and C $1.
So the payments have been reduced from $23, to only $4. A 83% reduction!
The great thing is, before ActiveClearing, that B,C would have to a) have $7,$6 onhand (or possibly even borrow the funds), and b) physically transfer those funds. With ActiveClearing, they are not even participants in the transfer. They can take this $7,$6 and use it to grow their businesses!
Test #3
Tougher one! Now there are 4 companies with different payment flow.
What Net payment does each company pay under ActiveClearing?
Nope! Try again.
Perfect!
Both B and D have negative amounts (-$8,-$2). A has a +$5, C has a +$5. So B can pay A their +$5, which leaves -$3 which they can pay C. This leaves +$2 owing C which D will pay to round the whole A-B-C-D square as fully paid.
So the payments have been reduced from $24, to only $10. A 58% reduction!
And again, before ActiveClearing, A,C would have to a) have $5,$2 onhand, and b) physically transfer those funds. With ActiveClearing, they are not even participants in the transfer. Even B benefits since their payment has decreased from $10 to $8, and D has theirs reduced from $7 to $2.
